# Manage SSH Keys

> Save your public SSH keys in the FlashRDP Billing Portal and pick them when you deploy or reinstall a Linux VPS, so you can sign in as root without a password.

Save your public SSH keys in the Billing Portal once, then pick them when you deploy or reinstall a Linux VPS. The server is set up with those keys for `root`, so you can sign in without a password.

<Note>
  You can save SSH keys once your first server is set up.
</Note>

## Add a key

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create a key pair (if you don't have one)">
    On your computer, run:

    ```bash theme={null}
    ssh-keygen -t ed25519
    ```

    This creates a private key (keep it secret) and a public key ending in `.pub`, for example `~/.ssh/id_ed25519.pub`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open SSH keys">
    Sign in to the [Billing Portal](https://new.flashrdp.com/ssh-keys) and click **SSH keys** in the sidebar, under **Public cloud**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Paste the public key">
    Under **Add a key**, enter a **Name** (for example "Work laptop") and paste the contents of your `.pub` file into **Public key**. Click **Save key**.

    </Frame>
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Never paste a private key. The portal refuses it, and you should treat a private key you pasted anywhere as leaked.
</Warning>

Accepted key types: Ed25519, ECDSA, and RSA with at least 2,048 bits (including the hardware-backed `sk-` variants). You can save up to 20 keys and make up to 20 key changes per hour.

## Use your keys

* **New server:** on the [Deploy](/docs/getting-started/ordering-a-server) page, pick a Linux image, then choose a saved key under **SSH access**. You can also pick **Add custom SSH key** to paste a key for that server only.
* **Reinstall:** on the server's **Reinstall** tab, select keys under **SSH keys**. See [Reinstall your server](/docs/control-panel/reinstall-server).

Then connect with `ssh root@your-server-ip`. See [Connect over SSH](/docs/linux-vps/ssh-access).

## Remove a key

Click the trash icon next to the key, then click **Remove** to confirm. The key is no longer offered for new installs.

<Info>
  Saved keys only apply when a server is installed. Servers that are already running keep the keys they were installed with. To add or remove a key on a running server, edit `/root/.ssh/authorized_keys` inside the server.
</Info>
