# How to Buy RDP Safely: A Checklist Before You Pay

> How to buy an RDP server safely: get your own new Windows VPS from a real provider, check the terms and licensing, pay through proper checkout and lock down the server.

**To buy RDP safely, buy a new Windows VPS from a provider that runs its own servers and publishes its terms, pay through its own checkout, and change the `Administrator` password as soon as you sign in.** Never buy "RDP accounts" or logins from forums, chat sellers or shops: those are often other people's hacked computers.

<Tip>Want a server set up for you in minutes? A [FlashRDP Windows VPS](https://flashrdp.com/windows-rdp?utm_source=docs\&utm_medium=guide\&utm_campaign=buy_rdp_safely) is a new KVM virtual machine with full Administrator access in Phoenix, AZ or Paris, France, from \$11.99/mo.</Tip>

## Why "cheap RDP" listings can be dangerous

Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) logins are traded on criminal marketplaces. In 2019 the US Department of Justice shut down **xDedic**, a marketplace that sold login credentials to more than 700,000 compromised servers worldwide and, by the authorities' estimate, facilitated more than \$68 million in fraud ([Justice Department](https://www.justice.gov/usao-mdfl/pr/xdedic-marketplace-website-involved-illicit-sale-compromised-computer-credentials-and)).

If you buy a login to a machine someone else owns, you don't control it: the real owner or the seller can watch, change or wipe it at any time, and using it can make you part of a crime. A legitimate RDP is always a server created for you, with credentials only you receive.

## The checklist

<Steps>
  <Step title="The seller is a real company">
    Look for a named legal entity, a business address, and published Terms of Service, a refund policy and an Acceptable Use Policy. FlashRDP is operated by FlashRDP LLC, a Wyoming company; its terms are in [Terms of Service](/docs/terms/introduction).
  </Step>

  <Step title="You get your own new server, not a shared login">
    You should receive a newly created virtual machine with its own IP address and full `Administrator` access, and be able to reset the password, reinstall the operating system and restart it yourself. Shared or "lifetime" RDP accounts give you none of that.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Windows licensing is explained">
    A legitimate provider says how Windows is licensed: included in the price, sold as an add-on, or a trial you replace with your own license. FlashRDP installs Windows Server with Microsoft's 180-day evaluation license and doesn't sell licenses; see [Check your Windows license](/docs/windows-rdp/first-steps#check-your-windows-license). If a seller can't answer, treat it as a warning sign.
  </Step>

  <Step title="You pay through the provider's own checkout">
    Pay on the provider's website or billing portal and get an invoice. Card or cryptocurrency are both fine when they go through official checkout; never send money to a personal wallet or account a seller gives you in a chat. FlashRDP takes payments in the [Billing Portal](https://new.flashrdp.com/).
  </Step>

  <Step title="The refund terms are clear">
    Read what happens if the server isn't delivered. FlashRDP refunds a payment in full if the server isn't provisioned within 24 hours; see the [Refund Policy](/docs/terms/refund-policy).
  </Step>

  <Step title="You lock it down on day one">
    Change the `Administrator` password, install Windows updates and protect the RDP port before you install anything else. Follow [First steps on your Windows VPS](/docs/windows-rdp/first-steps) and [RDP security](/docs/security/rdp-security).
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Warning signs

* Prices far below what providers charge for the same RAM and CPU, often sold as "lifetime" access.
* Logins delivered by chat or email with no account, invoice or control panel.
* No way to reset the password or reinstall the operating system.
* Admin rights withheld, or other users already signed in to the desktop.
* No company name, terms or refund policy anywhere on the site.
