Nextcloud VPS · Self-hosted cloud
Self-host Nextcloud on your own VPS.
A FlashRDP Nextcloud VPS is an Ubuntu 24.04 KVM server with full root access for running Nextcloud, the open-source file sync and collaboration suite, with your files, calendars and contacts on a server you control. Plans start at $11.99/month with 50 GB SSD, in Phoenix, AZ or Paris, France.
What self-hosted Nextcloud needs
Nextcloud's admin manual and its All-in-One (AIO) installer set the requirements below. Storage is usually what you outgrow first, so size the server by disk.
| Need | Nextcloud | FlashRDP Linux VPS |
|---|---|---|
| Install method | Nextcloud All-in-One, the official Docker-based installer | Ubuntu 24.04 on KVM with full root, so Docker runs on a real kernel |
| Operating system | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is supported | Ubuntu 24.04 LTS image at checkout |
| Memory | At least 128 MB per PHP process; 512 MB recommended | 4 GB (Bronze) to 32 GB RAM |
| Storage | Files live on the server disk; AIO recommends SSD | 50 GB (Bronze) to 200 GB SSD: NVMe in Phoenix, SATA SSD in Paris |
| Domain and HTTPS | One domain pointing to the server; AIO gets the certificate | Dedicated IPv4 for your domain's A record |
| Backups | BorgBackup built into AIO, to a local path or a remote repository | Optional server backups as a second layer |
Pick a plan by how much you store
Nextcloud keeps your files on the server's own disk, so storage decides the plan. Start small and move up as files and users grow.
Personal cloud
BRONZE
2 vCPU · 4 GB RAM · from $11.99/mo
50 GB SSD for one person's files, calendar and contacts.
Family or small team
SILVER
4 vCPU · 8 GB RAM · from $22.39/mo
100 GB SSD and 8 GB RAM for several users and apps such as Talk.
Most storage
EMERALD
8 vCPU · 32 GB RAM · from $55.99/mo
200 GB SSD, the most any plan offers; mount external storage beyond that.
Every plan is the same price in Phoenix and Paris. See the full Linux VPS plan range; server backups are $5/month, free on quarterly or longer billing.
The official All-in-One install
Install Docker first, for example with curl -fsSL https://get.docker.com | sh. Then run the AIO mastercontainer, copied from Nextcloud's README. It deploys Nextcloud with PostgreSQL, Redis and the optional apps you pick, and runs updates and backups from its own interface.
AIO uses ports 80 and 443 for your domain, 8080 and 8443 for its own interface, and 3478 (TCP and UDP) if you enable Talk. Open port 8080 by IP address, not by domain.

Self-hosted Nextcloud questions
Is Nextcloud free to self-host?
Yes. Nextcloud Server is open source under the AGPL-3.0 license and the All-in-One installer is free. Nextcloud GmbH sells Enterprise subscriptions with support, but you do not need one to run it.
How much storage do I need?
As much as the files you plan to keep, plus room for file versions and the trash bin. FlashRDP plans offer 50 to 200 GB SSD. For more, Nextcloud's External storage app can connect S3-compatible or SFTP storage.
How much RAM does Nextcloud need?
Nextcloud's admin manual asks for at least 128 MB of RAM per PHP process and recommends 512 MB. Start on Bronze (4 GB) for a personal instance and watch memory use; move to Silver (8 GB) as users and apps such as Talk or Office grow.
Do I need a domain?
Yes. AIO needs one domain pointing to the server and gets a TLS certificate for it; it does not run on a bare IP address with a self-signed certificate. If you have no domain, AIO can register a free dedyn.io subdomain through deSEC.
How do backups work?
AIO includes BorgBackup: schedule daily backups from the AIO interface to a local path or a remote Borg repository, and restore from the same screen. FlashRDP's server backups add a second layer for $5/month, free on quarterly or longer billing.
Phoenix or Paris?
Pick the location closest to the people who use it. Prices are the same in both; Phoenix uses NVMe SSD and Paris uses SATA SSD.
